Vegetarians

They have just announced that (shock horror) 50% of all emails are spam.
Well, if my experience is anything to go by, that means some other folk somewhere are doing very well to keep the nationwide average that low.
Researchers have also found that having your email address posted on a website somewhere is the surest way to come in for lots of spam.
Which offers the devious an extremely easy way to get back at annoying smug people who say they never receive any...

More eToys !!

Suddenly it's happening all at once. No sooner do we hear about eTeddies, It seems that the Sony Aibo can now be controlled by email.

Doesn't quite have the same spontaneity out in the local park, does it ?
Presumably it would have to be wireless, but judging by recent events concerning wireless baby alarms, telling the robo dog to "put it down" would probably result in a nearby 747 landing in the park.

Bear Market

Kids toys have got out of hand. They now have... a teddy bear with voicemail. I find it bad enough that my daughter has a fire engine that if not played for a few minutes starts to call to you from across the room (causing a baby sitter to once assume there was an intruder in the house), but voicemail? I foresee a day when the neighbours toys get invited round to play with our toys, irrespective of the kids themselves.
But if all this is possible, why can't Microsoft fix it so my WiFi network comes back on after my laptop has been hibernating?

Finally for all engineers who like automation and soccer, there's RoboCup . I particularly liked the pictures of the Sony 4 legged league, matches between teams of Sony Aibo dogs. (As I can't link to their site without permission, I suggest you to type "RoboCup" into Google). If only my job was that much fun...
