Thanks to the readers who, after last week’s item on NASA’s moonshot publicity, gently pointed out that there’s another space exploration project well under way with its origins much closer to us here in the UK. The European Space Agency’s Aurora programme has the massive aims of exploring the universe, stimulating new technology, and “inspiring the young people of Europe to take a greater interest in science and technology”. The medium-term aim is a human expedition to Mars by 2030, but there’s a lot more planned before then, and I know several readers are already involved in those projects, including ExoMars, a rover mission to investigate the surface of Mars. Every time I talk here about what NASA is up to, thousands of you (really) click through to the various NASA web sites, so I feel obliged to revisit the subject regularly. Despite (or perhaps because of) the continuing success of the Mars rovers, our thoughts are probably turning to what’s next; and one answer was delivered this week to the Kennedy Space Centre in the USA. So, instinctively, where do you think Britain’s main manufacturing region is? The West Midlands? Wrong. In terms of the 12 regions defined by National Statistics, it’s actually the north-west of England. But in turn, that’s only because London and the south-east of England together are so much bigger than any other region that the two are recorded separately. (more…)

This week saw the creation of Britain’s largest ever trade union, Unite, the merger of the Amicus and T+G unions. Its 2 million members include a strong representation from the manufacturing sector, and I’m sure will include a number of our UK readers. I understand the organisation is also working towards a merger with the 850,000-strong United Steelworkers union in the US, which would be the first transatlantic labour organisation. (more…)
