The disastrous floods have had the civil engineers in hard hats saying “I told you so”

The disastrous floods which hit Yorkshire, the East Midlands and more recently southern England have brought a second flood on to the streets: civil engineers in hard hats saying “I told you so”. And they certainly have been saying so, for a long time; I’m sure you only have to look at the Institution of Civil Engineers web site for the evidence. (more…)

A few new things to talk about this week with regard to Engineeringtalk

A few new things to talk about this week with regard to Engineeringtalk. Firstly, I’m excited to announce that later this month, we’ll be merging the separate Industrialsafetytalk site into Engineeringtalk. This will give us a whole new section on health and safety issues, which always seem to generate a lot of interest from readers. The problems in designing products to meet differing worldwide standards are obvious, and it’s useful to be able to provide you with news from various standards bodies, as well as from suppliers who are experienced in dealing with the differences. The IET’s annual “skills survey” of 500 companies says that a crisis is exactly what we have.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology, which was created from the IEE and IIE, has over 150,000 members, and can consider itself to be one of the leading voices of our profession. When it warns of an recruitment crisis in UK engineering and technology, I would hope that the government takes notice. And the IET’s annual “skills survey” of 500 companies says that a crisis is exactly what we have. (more…)

Being at the receiving end of a lot of articles, I often get asked by manufacturers to recommend good freelance technical writers. After all, if you get it right, investing a few hundred pounds in having a good technical article written can pay for itself many times over. (more…)
