Finding myself with an unexpected few hours in London last week, I decided to visit the Design Museum for the first time in several years. Unlike many major museums in the UK, the Design Museum is not funded by the taxpayer, so it’s already fighting an uphill battle to impress the visitor. Perversely though, because it costs seven pounds to get in, you expect more, not less. (more…)

Another great bit of (serious) fun coming up is this year’s X Prize Cup, taking place in New Mexico, USA in October. The 2007 Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge aims to develop technology for taking off and landing vertically on the Moon, and will be fascinating to (more…)

A survey issued this week from Girlguiding UK claims that careers advice for young women “remains strongly prejudiced by gender”. Some 35% of members aged 14-26 believe that “being female has influenced the types of careers they are encouraged to follow”. (more…)

I’d like to welcome this week the many readers from our industrial health and safety publication, Industrialsafetytalk. We’ve decided to incorporate that specialist title into Engineeringtalk, as such a large part of its content was already being covered here in our more general context. With the web being so search-oriented these days, it doesn’t make sense to run the same news on more than one site. Most of the news from the Industrialsafetytalk site (going back several years) which we didn’t have on Engineeringtalk has been transferred over, and we hope that the Industrialsafetytalk email newsletter readers will still find the news they need in this broader-ranging publication.
