If you haven’t seen it recently

If you haven’t seen it recently, I’d like to strongly recommend you take a look at our sister publication, “The Engineer”, which - although obviously a print magazine - has an excellent online reproduction where you can read the whole issue. Obviously this is no substitute for having the real thing arrive in the post each week, but it does give you a good idea of how impressive the magazine is nowadays under its highly-regarded editorial team. Fuel economy is being forced on automotive manufacturers by legislation, as it needs to be when market forces alone won’t force the pace of change as quickly as is necessary. European standards under debate would push the CO2 target down to 120g per km by 2009, which equates to a fuel consumption well under 6 litres/100km. In the US, CAFE standards for 2007 models are 27.5 miles/gallon, and proposals are being considered to raise this to 35 miles/gallon by 2012. (more…)

Figures released this week on research and development spending can be read in all sorts of ways, and indeed many financial commentators have been quite selective in the aspects they want to highlight. On the one hand, the 850 UK companies which invest the most in R+D increased their budgets to nearly twenty-one billion pounds in 2006, a 9% increase compared to a global average of 10%.
