It’s time for me to say goodbye to the newsletter which I began in 2000 with just a handful of subscribers. Some 397 issues and over 50,000 more readers later, I’m still going to be very much involved in Engineeringtalk in the new year, but working more on developing the web site. We’ll reveal the new editor and his aims for this publication in January. Until then, my very best wishes for a happy, prosperous and healthy 2008. (more…)

It’s nice to have a number of good technical background articles this week

It’s nice to have a number of good technical background articles this week, in addition to all our normal latest new product news. If you scroll down to “New technical articles and case studies” below, you’ll see links to three good articles on automation, and another on power transmission. They cover changes to EN1088, plant shutdown safety, the advantages of industrial PCs, and the key role of bearings when designing with environmental considerations in mind. All are well worth a read.

It’s been over six months since I mentioned our friends the NASA Mars Rovers

It’s been over six months since I mentioned our friends the NASA Mars Rovers, and if you haven’t been following them as frequently as I have, the news is that they’re still going! NASA has extended (for a fifth time!) the activities of “Spirit” and “Opportunity”, which continue to produce terrific scientific results despite operating way beyond their design life. (more…)
