Jamie Buchanan is to head up the new Product Design and Development Division at virtual engineering specialist Altair Engineering Buchanan's appointment and the development of the Product Design and Development Division which replaces the Engineering Services unit will enable Altair to further extend its client portfolio from its predominantly automotive and aerospace base into new markets

Using proprietary Altair computer aided engineering (CAE) tools such as HyperWorks and incorporating a strengthened virtual engineering consultancy service, the new Product Design and Development Division will help clients accelerate existing projects and improve the end products.

Altair's new division will offer both a comprehensive, design-to-prototype product development service and consultancy at specific points in the design process.

The division's recent activities include saving 500kg on the design of the new Airbus A380 and providing a radical design for an oilfield product for Schlumberger.

Buchanan comes to Altair from Simpact Engineering where, as a Director, he generated new business across a range of industries.

He has also worked for British Aerospace, MSX International and MIRA (Motor Industry Research Association).

In the automotive industry he gained particular skills in CAE evaluations of crashworthiness of high performance motor vehicles such as the Jaguar X-Type.

In the aerospace industry, he specialised in structural analysis work.

"Altair is best known for its work in the automotive and aerospace industries, but our recent work in offshore engineering, consumer goods and pharmaceutical applications has demonstrated that our CAE capabilities are suited to a very wide range of industries", said Royston Jones, Managing Director of Altair Engineering.

"With his strategic insights and experience in dealing with key decision-makers, Jamie Buchanan is well-suited to leading our new division and to bring virtual engineering to clients in new markets and help them save time, cash and improve their products".

"Having used and respected Altair's products for many years, it is a great step forward in my career to join the company at the forefront of virtual engineering technology", said Buchanan.

"I look forward to leading the new division and working with colleagues in the two UK offices as well being able to call upon the knowledge of colleagues across Altair's international offices".
