ABB drive saves two days of set up time
A 37 kW variable speed drive with Direct Torque Control (DTC) from ABB Automation is being used to control the speed of a motor in a friction-welding machine that manufactures valves for car engines.
Previously, the drives had to be ordered direct through ABB's German manufacturing unit with a standard lead-time of 2 weeks.
"Reports about the death of the DC market have been greatly exaggerated.
In the UK alone the market is worth in the region of £20 million each year," says Steve Ruddell, General Manager, Drives & Motors Division at ABB Automation.
"Now that we have levelled the playing field in terms of delivery, we will bring the same customer support functions that have enhanced our AC drives range and target a major share of this market," adds Ruddell.
Since 1987, ICS has provided specialist AC and DC expertise and systems integrating capabilities to the metal, plastic and rubber sectors.
End-users include companies like British Steel and Avesta Sheffield with process machine building clients like Herr-Voss, Stamco-UK, Georg-UK and Durmech.
"Faster response times will make ABB's DC drives a much more attractive option for new contracts and will also enable us to provide very fast repair or replacement services for clients whose whole production systems rely on their equipment being up and running 24 hours a day." Says Trevor Darrall, Managing Director at ICS.
