Lighter AC drives for machine builders

A Pump and Fan Control (PFC) macro - which enables a single drive to control up to four motors - is now supplied as standard with ABB's Comp-AC drives for 2.2-37 kW (380-480 V).
In response to customer requests for smaller drives, ABB has launched new versions of its Comp-AC drives without a built-in heatsink.
The drives are intended for mounting directly on a heat dissipating surface, so the mounting surface itself acts as the heatsink.
The heatsinkless drives are considerably smaller and lighter than the versions with a built-in heatsink.
The frame height is reduced by up to 38% and the weight by up to 41%.
ABB seeks to reassure customers who might be concerned about possible overheating problems with the new drives.
The company states that with a correctly mounted heatsinkless drive, the ambient temperature will in most cases be more stable than with the conventional type of drive.
This is because the heat is dissipated over a larger surface.
Furthermore, all Comp-AC drives (both with and without built-in heatsinks) are fitted with an effective thermal cut-out system and an automatic alarm that is activated when the temperature rises to 95% of the thermal cut-out trip level.
The drives also feature internal temperature monitoring, and if required temperature data can be output for monitoring by the user.
ABB can now supply the heatsinkless Comp-AC drives for 1-phase (200-240 V) and 3-phase (200-240 V and 380-480 V) supplies.
The power ranges are 0.12-0.75 kW for 200-240 V and 0.37-1.1 kW for 380-480 V.
