Cutting downtime, reducing energy costs and saving inventory are the objectives of a new chain of AC motor specialists, ABB Motor Service Partners, comprising 12 independent companies.

Cutting downtime, reducing energy costs and saving inventory are the objectives of a new chain of AC motor specialists, ABB Motor Service Partners 12 independent companies have joined forces with ABB to supply motors, and provide advice on maintenance, reliability, energy efficiency and stock management

"The thrust of the new organisation is to save money for motor users," says Nigel Evenett, Manager for Motors and Rotating Machines at ABB.

"Most users are not aware how much their motors are costing them.

The purchase price is only a very small part of the equation.

The ABB Motor Service Partners can install and maintain motors to get the lowest cost over the life cycle." ABB Motor Service Partners will appear under a common signature, providing a high and consistent level of service across the country.

ABB will ensure that training, stocks and other aspects of the service are set to the same standards across the network.

The participating partners will act as the extended arm of ABB towards its own customers.

"ABB is the first motor manufacturer to take responsibility for the whole supply chain, all the way to the customer," says Evenett.

"As a supplier, we have found it frustrating having to rely on independent distributors without being able to influence the service they give.

ABB Motor Service Partners will be trained and backed by us, bringing the quality service we want to deliver, down to the factory floor." ABB Motor Service Partners will provide professional support for all low voltage motors throughout the life cycle.

This includes advising on repairs and replacements as necessary, carry out maintenance, energy surveys and condition monitoring.

The members will co-operate to provide fast access to motors.

"The aim is to reduce the supply costs, improve energy efficiency and increase productivity," Evenett adds.

The members of the network have been hand picked by ABB and each partner has, according to Evenett, undergone "rigorous scrutiny" of their infrastructure to meet customer demand.

The partners will be technically audited annually to ensure high standards are maintained and training will be provided where appropriate.

ABB Motor Service Partners will all be required to stock motors up to 37kW on the premises for fast delivery.

A pool of less common models will be shared between the partners and can be accessed at short notice.

All the partners also have access to ABB's Central Stock in Germany, with 300,000 items available at 72 hours notice.

In addition, they all have full repair and rewind facilities.

All are trained to work on explosion proof motors.

This will enable customers to receive impartial advice on whether to repair or rewind a particular motor.

The partners will also have facilities for condition monitoring, energy surveys, and offer to undertake planned maintenance.

"We spend a lot of money running our motors, if we can reduce these costs by 1-2% in selected areas, by the use of energy efficient motors, that is a substantial saving in terms of both energy and money," says Paul Ilko, Electrical Services Engineer at Corus Tubes in Corby, Northamptonshire.

"To enable us to achieve this, in the most economic way, we need to develop an effective motor management programme.

We need to consider a partnership with a company that can offer competent advice on these issues, supply energy efficient motors at reasonable prices, and help us cut downtime through efficient stockholding.

ABB can help us achieve this.".
