ABB Motor Service Partners has secured a contract to repair, replace and maintain low voltage AC motors for Severn Trent Water over the next three years.

ABB Motor Service Partners has secured a contract to repair, replace and maintain low voltage AC motors for Severn Trent Water over the next three years A single point of contact to all ABB Motor Service Partners has been provided through the creation of a new company, MSP Network

Severn Trent Water has approximately 60,000 motors, between 0.5 and 300kW, across some 5000 sites, which range from large treatment works to small pumping stations.

The company is the main water supplier in the East Midlands, West Midlands and the Severn estuary, supplying some eight million domestic and industrial customers.

"We needed a partner that could provide a consistent service across a large geographical area, whilst helping us enforce our energy saving programme", explains Richard Blythe, senior buyer at Severn Trent Water.

ABB Motor Service Partners will rewind failed motors, or replace them with new motors on the basis of the lowest life cycle cost.

Severn Trent Water is aiming to reduce its annual electricity bill, a large part of which is due to the use of motors, by replacing failed low-efficiency motors with new high-efficiency ones.

When a motor fails, ABB Motor Service Partners will decide the best course of action depending on the application and whether the motor has been rewound before.

"A high efficiency motor is typically 2-3% more efficient than its lower efficiency counterpart", explains Steve Ruddell, general manager, electrical machines, for ABB in the UK.

"A high-efficiency 90kW motor, for instance, can save as much as GBP 12,000 over its service life.

Such differences are highly significant when managing large motor populations.

However, for motors with shorter running hours, rewinding can be a cost effective alternative".

"Having an organisation fronted by a motor manufacturer is an added bonus for us", says Blythe.

With the involvement of ABB, we can be confident to solve any problem that might occur.

"The alignment between the manufacturer and the service provider will result in a better understanding that over time will help us improve the installed base, which will give improved reliability, reducing failures and maintenance, as well as improved energy efficiency".

The formation of MSP Network will give Severn Trent Water a single point of contact, reducing administration, as well as a consistent standard of repairs and a rigorously enforced motor management policy.

ABB Motor Service partners will supply a full range of low voltage AC motors and medium-voltage machines, as well as carry out repairs to the established base.

They will also look at improving energy efficiency across the sites and improve reliability by carrying out planned maintenance and condition monitoring.

The contract, which was won in competition with 62 other companies, is worth up to GBP 700,000 over three years, with the option for Severn Trent Water to extend for another two years.

It will primarily be serviced by four members of the ABB Motor Service Partners network: Central Electrical in Liverpool and Wolverhampton; CovElec in Leicester; HG Rewinds in Stoke on Trent; and W Mages in Cheddar.
