ABB drive saves two days of set up time
A 37 kW variable speed drive with Direct Torque Control (DTC) from ABB Automation is being used to control the speed of a motor in a friction-welding machine that manufactures valves for car engines.
Unlike many other drives, the ABB standard drive with IP54 enclosure does not require derating.
Many competing products must be derated by up to 15% to prevent overheating due to the relatively air tight IP54 enclosure.
This forces users to specify larger, more expensive drives than are needed.

AC drive cuts mixer's maintenance bill by 80%
A reduction of over 80% in maintenance costs has been achieved by replacing a star/delta starter with a variable speed drive on a breakfast cereal mixer at a leading UK supermarket food producer.
The design of the ABB standard drive with IP54 enclosure has improved cooling fans and internal layout.
This ensures that an adequate air volume circulates to keep the drive cool when operating at full capacity without derating.
An IP54 enclosure protects the drive from the ingress of dust and splashing water.
This removes the need for an additional cabinet in many situations, including sheltered outdoor positions.
IP54 is also a common specification in the water industry, while food and drink manufacturers often need to protect drives that are positioned adjacent to production equipment that requires frequent washing down.
The IP54 drives share the innovative features of the rest of the ABB standard drive family, including a startup assistant to guide users through all essential settings without the need to access complex parameter lists.
If a fault occurs, simply pressing the "help" button will suggest ways to fix it.
The control panel is similar in look and functionality to a mobile phone and features two soft keys, the function of which changes according to the state of the panel.
This enables easy commissioning, fast set-up, simple configuration and rapid fault diagnosis.
The harmonic signature of the drive is reduced by swinging DC chokes.
These suppress inverter harmonics so that the percentage of total harmonic distortion goes down when the load is reduced.
EMC compliance is built in.
An integrated braking chopper absorbs the braking energy, helping decelerate the load more quickly.
The drives reduce noise levels with a noise optimisation feature, which increases the switching frequency of the drive when the motor load is reduced, thereby lowering motor noise.
The drives come with Modbus as standard.
High performance protocols such as Profibus, DeviceNet and LONworks can be added using adapter cards.
The full range of standard drives is available with a standard seven-day delivery or via ABB Drives Alliance partners across the country on a same-day delivery basis.
