ABB and Severn Trent Water have won the Electrical Industry Awards 2006 for "Best Environmental Initiative of the Year".

ABB and Severn Trent Water have won the Electrical Industry Awards 2006 for "Best Environmental Initiative of the Year", following an installation that reduced energy consumption by over GBP 12,000 per annum at Severn Trent's Wanlip Sewage Treatment Works in Leicestershire This is the second year running that ABB wins the environmental prise at the Electrical Industry Awards

Last year, the company claimed the prise for its replacement drives scheme, which aims to assess, replace and recycle variable speed drives from any manufacturer, improving reliability and energy efficiency.

"This shows that the effort we have invested over the last decade to become the leaders in energy saving technology is paying off", says Brian Dick, Managing Director for Sentridge, ABB's local partner and the company that installed the equipment at Severn Trent Water.

The savings at the Wanlip site were achieved by Sentridge installing three 37kW ABB standard drives, replacing 20-year-old Heenan drives of the same rating on water process pumps, producing over 65% energy saving.

Payback was achieved in just six months and over GBP 150,000 will ultimately be saved over the working life period of the drives.

"This is only one of many sites we are working with, although this one showed particularly impressive results", Dick continues.

"The interest in energy efficiency is definitely on the increase".

"Users are becoming aware that there are massive energy savings to be made on the average industrial site, at the same time as the message about climate change is beginning to sink in".

"Using ABB's six-step energy saving plan, a method for identifying energy waste in industry and achieving rapid savings, we have a long list of clients who are now benefiting from savings achieved in a similar way to those at Severn Trent's Wanlip site".

The Electrical Industry Awards are organised by NICEIC and Nexus Media Communications, publishers of Electrical Times, Electrical Review and European Power News.
