Smoke venting motors meet European
standard
New smoke venting motors from ABB can now take advantage of the surrounding airstream for cooling when mounted inside a ventilation duct.
New smoke venting motors from ABB can now take advantage of the surrounding airstream for cooling when mounted inside a ventilation duct The motors do not require fans or fan covers and the high air flow available from the main ventilation fan in many cases enables the motor rating to be increased without exceeding the motor's temperature rise limits

ABB drive saves two days of set up time
A 37 kW variable speed drive with Direct Torque Control (DTC) from ABB Automation is being used to control the speed of a motor in a friction-welding machine that manufactures valves for car engines.
This means a smaller motor size can often be selected, saving cost.
The motors are designed to mitigate the development of fires in industrial and public buildings, tunnels and other locations.
They have dual-purpose certification, enabling use also for standard ventilation.
The motors are tested to withstand temperatures up to 400C for two hours.
Smoke venting motors are used in emergency ventilation to create smoke-free areas for rescue and fire fighting operations, as well as help reduce the spread of smoke and fire to other areas.
ABB's smoke venting motors comply with the European standard EN12101-3, which became mandatory in new installations in 1st April 2005.
The standard determines the safety requirements to be fulfilled by motors intended for ventilation systems in closed or underground public spaces.
A new brochure is available on ABB's range of smoke venting motors.
The new brochure also highlights how energy-saving variable speed drives can be used with ABB's smoke venting motors.
ABB's smoke venting motors range from 0.55 to 560kW, IEC frame sizes 80 to 400.
Two-pole motors are available up to frame size 250 and 4-12 pole up to 400 frame size, single or two-speed, in aluminium or cast iron.
Pad mounting is available from size 280 and above.
