ABB has been awarded a contract to inspect and maintain 11kV switchgear and transformers at clean water and sewage treatment works across the Severn Trent Water western region.
ABB has been awarded a three year and three month contract to inspect and maintain 11kV switchgear and transformers at clean water and sewage treatment works across the Severn Trent Water western region covering much of the Midlands and part of Wales.
With an estimated value of around GBP 180,000 the contract will run through to March 2008.
The contract was won by competitive tender and involves the inspection, maintenance and repair of equipment supplied by a variety of manufacturers.
Prior to winning this contract ABB had carried out maintenance and repair work for Severn Trent Water over a number of years.
Under the terms of the contract ABB will inspect and take oil samples from approximately 250 transformers on sewage and water supply sites every two years.
ABB engineers will also check all equipment for evidence of electrical discharges using ultrasound detection equipment.
Already, this process has detected a number of partial discharges.
These have been detected and repaired at a very early stage thus preventing the development of more serious and costly problems.
Severn Trent Water has a programme to maintain high voltage switchgear on all sites once every six years.
ABB carries out this work as part of the new contract and ABB engineers work closely with Severn Trent Water's own engineers to arrange the shutdowns, to minimise disruption and fit the company's operational needs.
Severn Trent Water is one of the UK's largest water supply companies providing fresh water and treating sewage for around eight million people in the Midlands and part of Wales.
Its area includes the major cities of Birmingham, Coventry, Nottingham, Leicester and Stoke on Trent and stretches from Scunthorpe in the north to Gloucester in the south and from east to west between Welshpool and Nottingham.
