Switchgear module receives ENA certification

An ABB Power Technologies product story

ABB's innovative PASS MO self-contained switchgear module for outdoor distribution substations up to 145kV has received ENA certification.

ABB's innovative PASS (plus and switch system) MO self-contained switchgear module for outdoor distribution substations up to 145kV has received ENA (Energy Networks Association) certification.

This now enables UK substation operators to take advantage of a new generation in HV switchgear featuring a compact space-saving design which offers increased availability, reduced maintenance and low installation and operating costs.

The new PASS MO 145kV switchgear module is a hybrid of ABB's traditional air insulated (AIS) and SF6 metal-clad gas insulated (GIS) switchgear units.

It integrates all the necessary substation switchgear bay functions, including a circuit breaker, one or more combined disconnector/earthing switches, bushings for connection to single or double busbar systems and current transformers in one compact module, eliminating the need for separate pieces of equipment for each function.

PASS MO modules are ideally suited for retrofit, extensions or new build substations.

The compact design can save up to 70% of the space required for the construction of a conventional AIS substation.

In addition the PASS MO provides fast and simple installation - typically one day installation time per bay - as well as a major reduction in civil works such as foundations, steelwork and cable trenching operations.

The PASS MO module is completely prefabricated, pre-wired and pretested at the factory, and fits into a standard truck container for delivery without any packaging.

No special arrangements are needed for shipping and transportation, and once on site just a simple 30 rotation of the outer poles is needed for the final layout.

A key feature of the PASS MO is its virtually maintenance-free design.

The line and busbar disconnectors, as well as the earthing switches, are integrated within the breaking chamber.

This gives these components complete immunity from all environmental conditions, thereby ensuring lifelong reliability, and eliminating routine maintenance of high voltage parts.

This overcomes a major weakness of AIS substations.

Standard PASS MO functions include current measurement, current interruption, disconnecting and earthing, all of which can be customised and added to according to customer requirements.
