Cable contract connects Swedish wind farm

An ABB Power Technologies product story

Contract to supply the power cables to offshore wind farm in Sweden will help generate enough electricity to power about 60,000 homes.

ABB has won a contract worth $16 million to supply the power cables to Lillgrund offshore wind farm in Sweden.

The installation is expected to generate enough electricity to power about 60,000 homes.

Lillgrund is the largest offshore wind farm in Sweden.

ABB won the order from Siemens Wind Power in Denmark to deliver more than 33km of single core AC cable and armoured three core AC cable with integrated optical fibre, supplied by ABB's high voltage cable and accessories production facilities in Sweden.

The project scope includes underground and submarine XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) insulated cables, cable laying and cable installation.

"The award of submarine cables for Lillgrund again shows that ABB is a leading supplier to the offshore wind power market", said Samir Brikho, Head of ABB's Power Systems division.

"Generating wind power offshore is a growth area for ABB, and such projects require highly reliable equipment - such as XLPE cables - to succeed".

Swedish Vattenfall's offshore wind farm Lillgrund is in Oresund, off the south coast of Sweden.

ABB will supply and install 6km-long, 145kV underground cable, and 27km-long 145 and 36kV submarine cables to connect 48, 2.3MW wind turbines, and transmit the power generated to the Swedish mainland.

The installation will be ready at the end of summer 2007.
