US $30 million transformer contract signed
A new wide-body carriage design and extra seating put severe restrictions on the size and weight of the transformers used.
ABB has signed a frame contract with Bombardier worth more than US $30 million to supply traction transformers for 172 new trains that will upgrade commuter travel around Paris.
The first order was booked in the second quarter of 2007, and builds on the long-term relationship between ABB and Bombardier.
"This contract reaffirms our position as a reliable partner and supplier of choice for Bombardier Transportation", said Bernhard Jucker, head of ABB's Power Products division.
"Our state of the art transformer technology is a compact, lightweight and robust solution that complements Bombardier's expertise in modern rail travel".
ABB's compact units were chosen because a new wide-body carriage design and extra seating put severe restrictions on the size and weight of the transformers used.
Powerful traction transformers are mounted on trains to ensure power supply to the motors, and since there is no back-up system due to limited space, they must be failsafe.
ABB will supply two transformers for each of 172 carriages being manufactured for SNCF (French National Railways) and STIF (Paris Region Transportation Council).
