Load testing system for diesel locos installed

An AG Measurematics product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 10, 2001

AG Measurematics has designed, manufactured and installed a load testing system for diesel locomotives at a loco Shed of the Northern Railway in India

Load testing of Diesel locomotives forms an important and regular procedure, which determines the effeciency of the locomotive after it has been manufactured, overhauled or repaired.

AG Measurematics has designed, manufactured and installed such equipment at a diesel Loco Shed in Northern Railway in India.

A similar system is due for installation at a Diesel locomotive Shed in Colombo, Sri Lanka. We supplied the transducers, shunts, thermocouples, LVDT, Signal conditioning system for current and high voltage and current measurement, Data Acquisition system, Computer, Printer and the Software.

For Colombo project we have designed the water load box capable of loading the generator of up to 1100 V DC to a load of up to 6000 Amp.

Through a system of motorized mechanism the set of positive plates can be raised or lowered to change the load current.

High current cbale, knife switches and bus bars are also part of supply.

This installation has increased our capability to handle turnkey projects of diversified nature.

The capabilities of the system include computerized monitoring of Traction Generator voltage, load current, Excitor voltage.

Excitor Current, Generator Field Current, Excitor field current, Reference Voltage, Fuel Rack advance, Lube oil pressures, Booster air pressure, water pump discharge pressure, cylinder head temperautre, fuel oil temperatures, Crank case vacuum, engine speed etc.

Application Software--LOCOtest, also designed and executed by our team of software engineers, allows on line plotting of V-I Characteristics of the generator.

A reference characterstic curve can be overlaid on the actual characteristic graph to enablr instant comparison.

Test reports are generated through the connected printer.

Data is saved in files on hard disk.

With earlier experience and this one AG Measurematics is now geared up to undertake such projects on turnkey bsais.
