Alibre is offering extended six-month free trials of Alibre Design to users in regions affected by the SARS epidemic.

Alibre is offering extended six-month free trials of Alibre Design to users in regions affected by the SARS disease: China, Taiwan, Singapore and the Toronto, Canada area.

Known as software for 3D mechanical design and parametric solid modelling, Alibre Design also includes robust tools for online, real-time collaboration.

Users conduct both spontaneous and scheduled team design sessions to review and edit designs with colleagues.

Alibre also uses the technology to provide real-time customer support.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome has infected several thousand people, and caused numerous deaths worldwide.

As a precaution, many businesses are banning travel to Asia, preventing face-to-face meetings for critical projects.

In fact, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a travel advisory that advises against nonessential travel to Hong Kong, mainland China, Singapore and Hanoi, Vietnam.

According to a survey by the Business Travel Coalition, 61% of businesses had banned travel as of 16th April, up from 58% the week before.

Businesses are instead relying on technology to connect with affected regions, using web-based collaboration tools to complete projects.

Alibre is offering extended free trials of Alibre Design to manufacturers in the affected regions so that they can maintain productivity.

The company already offers 30-day free trials of Alibre Design via its website.

Demo CDs are mailed to trial users, and the software may also be downloaded easily with a high-speed Internet connection.

"Online collaboration through Alibre Design enables companies to maintain productivity while they reduce travel as well as the expenses of creating and shipping drawings and prototypes", said J Paul Grayson, Alibre President and CEO.

"We'll maintain this offer until manufacturers feel that travel is safe again".
