Two important additions to ACT's range of tooling for precision small component production will be launched at this year's UK Tooling Show in November.
With the addition of these new tools, ACT is able to satisfy a very wide range of face-grooving and parting-off operations with inserts up to 2.2mm wide.
The new ACT Microcut system has been designed specifically for parting-off and grooving on Swiss-type CNC sliding head machines with cutting widths from 0.5 to 1.6mm.
A maximum 8mm reach allows parting-off up to 16mm diameter.
Toolholders are available with shanks from 8 to 25mm square.
Standard inserts are manufactured from TiN-coated ASP-60 cobalt high-speed steel, which performs successfully at the low surface speeds associated with small diameter parting-off and on difficult materials such as stainless steels.
Coated and uncoated sub-micrograin carbide grades are also available.
Inserts are available with either neutral or 15-degree approach angles.
Both insert types have a high-shear positive top rake which minimises cutting pressures and are held securely in position in a dovetail recess in the toolholder in order to provide secure clamping when machining.
A fixed back-stop ensures precise positioning of inserts when they are clamped.
A new range of radial face-grooving tools is also being launched at Tooling 2002 as the latest addition to the ACT2.2 system.
The new toolholders are designed for face-grooving at diameters from 14 to 100mm and depths up to 12mm, left or right handed.
The range initially includes 19 different standard toolholders, all of which have 20mm square shanks and integral support blades machined from solid high alloy steel for strength and rigidity.
Inserts are held positively in position by a flush-fitting spring-loaded mechanical top clamp which assists swarf removal and provides good access for coolant.
The system features a new geometry NDC insert with a 10-degree positive top rake which reduces the width of the swarf and ensures it exits freely from the groove.
An advanced sub-micron grade in coated and uncoated versions is also available for machining particularly difficult materials.
ACT is on stand 2361 at Tooling 2002.
