Mathcad takes on communication system design

An Adept Scientific product story

The Mathcad Communication System Design Pack combines wavelet, image and signal processing functions with the modelling and simulation capabilities of VisSim/Comm Personal Edition software.

Adept Scientific announces the new Communication System Design (CSD) Pack for Mathcad.

Available immediately, the CSD Pack combines an extensive set of wavelet, image and signal processing functions with the modelling and simulation capabilities of Visual Solution's VisSim/Comm Personal Edition software.

The result is a powerful, affordable and easy-to-use software tool that allows design engineers to perform virtual prototypes on their desktops, saving design time and money associated with physical modelling.

The new CSD Pack offers electrical engineers and others in the DSP field a comprehensive and economical design and analysis solution.

The software features extensive functionality for signal processing, wavelets and image processing for Mathcad, along with new modelling and simulation capabilities.

It creates an integrated environment for performing dynamic system simulations for communications, signal processing and control systems.

VisSim/Comm 4.5 Personal Edition (PE), the modelling and simulation package at the core of the CSD Pack, combines an intuitive drag-and-drop block diagram interface with a powerful time-domain simulation engine to produce fast and accurate solutions for even the most complex systems.

It includes over 180 blocks to model and simulate control, communication or signal processing systems or algorithms.

MATLAB integration tools and a SIMULINK translator are also provided.

The CSD Pack includes "no programming required" OLE compliant integration between VisSim/Comm PE and Mathcad, resulting in a truly seamless solution.

This powerful software package enables professionals in industries such as telecommunications, controls and instrumentation, automotive, aerospace and process control to quickly develop virtual prototypes of systems or processes in conjunction with the Mathcad desktop environment.

Mathcad documents and routines can be incorporated as blocks within the VisSim model.

This means users can experiment mathematically with variations of designs to demonstrate their behaviour interactively while modelling a system, effectively saving time and money while shortening the production process.

"Mathcad is the desktop design and calculation package of choice for engineers throughout the world," said John Gould, vice president of Sales and Marketing for Visual Solutions Inc.

"By working with MathSoft to combine the convenience and power of VisSim/Comm Personal Edition with the comprehensive digital signal processing resources and visual calculation environment of Mathcad, we have created the ideal DSP design tool." The CSD Pack also includes three of the latest Extension Packs which add extra functionality to Mathcad.

These are the Signal Processing Extension Pack, with over 70 built-in functions for performing signal filtering, spectral analysis and estimation and time-frequency analysis; the Image Processing Extension Pack, with over 140 image-processing functions that let users analyse, manipulate, extract and identify critical image features; and the Wavelets Extension Pack, providing 60 wavelet functions that cover five orthogonal and biorthogonal families, including advanced techniques for signal reconstruction, denoising, data compression and special numerical methods.

"Visualization and simulation are incredibly beneficial to designers because they save valuable time and resources," said Chris Randles, general manager of MathSoft's Engineering and Education Products Division.

"The CSD Pack offers Mathcad users an easy-to-use option for modelling and simulation at a very affordable price." The CSD Pack, and the full Mathcad and VisSim product ranges, are supplied and supported in the UK by Adept Scientific.
