MapleNet is a new release from Waterloo Maple that enables the rapid creation and delivery of online mathematics education.
Prior to this release MapleNet was available to select academic institutions and content partners already engaged in innovative education initiatives.
MapleNet will help educational institutions offer dynamic, self-paced, asynchronous courses and exercises in distance education.
MapleNet is a suite of software tools that allow institutions to create dynamic "software learning objects" - ie specialised interactive teaching and learning applications - and deliver them over the web.
With such learning objects, students can explore complex mathematical concepts using a standard browser.
MapleNet components include a mathematical server derived from the legendary Maple symbolic software engine; a system administration module that ensures easy installation, efficient operation, security, and easy maintenance of even large deployments; and tools for creating learning objects through Waterloo Maple's innovative Maplets technology.
Collectively, these components offer the only fully integrated software solution for distance and asynchronous education initiatives.
Darren McIntyre, Director of Business Development at Waterloo Maple states, "For years, academic users have been experimenting with online deployment of various maths software systems including ours.
MapleNet is the very first commercial product that offers the complementary components needed to move from these experimental projects to real educational initiatives".
MapleNet began in 2001 as a special initiative in cooperation with a group of strategic academic partners.
The partners tested product prototypes and offered valuable guidance to tune the product to meet the challenges of online education.
MapleNet provides educational institutions with a complete set of infrastructure and client tools for online education in mathematics and mathematics-dependent courses.
MapleNet allows authors/professors to create exercises and learning objects that are interactive and easy to use.
The student requires only a Java-enabled web browser to interface with the material.
MapleNet is derived from the legendary Maple software system, widely recognised as the most trusted desktop application for exploring mathematics and developing mathematical applications.
Consequently, the scope of learning objects that can be created with MapleNet is virtually unlimited, as the Maple engine supports computation ranging from high school level algebra to research-level theory.
MapleNet is available for a range of server platforms and popular browsers.
