Sticky weighing problem for DSM

An Applied Weighing International product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 28, 2003

All weighing systems at DSM's new plant in Cheshire are required to operate in a zone 1 hazardous area as components of the filled resin it produces include styrene and methyl methacrylate.

DSM Composite Resin provides innovative unsaturated polyester resins, high performance gelcoats and polymeric plasticisers to industrial customers.

The company's recent installation of a facility in Cheshire to manufacture a filled product - one application of which is to reinforce the rigidity of domestic baths - led it to install new machinery needed for the process.

Applied Weighing won the task of providing DSM's total weighing and filling solution at the new plant.

All weighing systems were required to operate in a zone 1 hazardous area as components of filled resin include styrene and methyl methacrylate - both of which have a low flashpoint.

A weighing system was initially needed to accurately measure the tank contents.

Applied Weighing evaluated the most effective way of ensuring that the load cell would comply with ATEX standards and would be reliable.

Three safemount weighing assemblies were installed under the tank, along with an intelligent load cell junction box.

The junction box can detect errors or failure in load cells and sets off an alarm before a potential problem can occur.

Once filled resin is manufactured it is sold in 1500kg containers and drums.

DSM therefore needed a system, which allowed the containers to be filled and weighed before leaving the site.

Applied Weighing used the ultra-low-profile weighing platform.

Robustly made from stainless steel, the weighing platform has been designed to meet the rigours of industrial weighing in zone 1 hazardous areas.

Mark Garston, Project Manager at DSM said: "We chose Applied Weighing because they provided us with a value for money quote, with a simple but efficient design.

The project was easy to install and Applied Weighing were always on hand to provide us with expert technical help if the need arose.

Since installation the weighing equipment has been working with no problems.

We are very pleased with the system".
