Greener finish protects bayonet connectors

An Aerco product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Apr 17, 2002

A new zinc cobalt finish gives bayonet connectors a high level of environmental protection without the environmental complications of a more traditional cadmium finish.

Aerco can now supply the popular ABB MS and ABCIR bayonet connectors with a zinc cobalt finish that retains the high levels of environmental protection and conductivity that a cadmium finish provides without the environmental complications.

Apart from production difficulties and problems associated with disposing of cadmium plated products, the use of cadmium represents a health risk in the event of fire.

The material is banned in many applications including all types of public service vehicles.

The new connectors are available in drab olive and black and in configurations from 1 to 61 crimp or solder contacts.

They are rated at 7.5 to 500A and have a temperature rating of -55 to +190C.

Versions with a higher temperature rating are also available and low fire hazard insulators are standard in the ABCIR range.

With a high level of protection against water ingress and excellent shielding and continuity characteristics between mated connectors these robust connectors are ideal for use in military vehicles, public transport and particularly the railroad industry, where they meet all relevant rail specifications.
