Grant helps cut the cost of software upgrade

An Advanced Engineering Skills Project product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 31, 2006

Torquay-based Multi-shot Applications has used a grant from the Advanced Engineering Skills Project to help its staff get to grips with new software.

An upgrade of existing software at Multi-shot Applications meant there was a need to upgrade the skills of the staff who worked with it - meaning a double expense for the Torquay-based plastic injection moulder and toolmaker.

Multi-shot used an AESP grant to cover half the training costs of the Smart Vision MRP and Report Writer course for three of its staff in June 2005, and before the end of the year was already noting a marked difference.

"We are getting a far better quantity and quality of management information; for instance, scrap reporting, product profitability and customer delivery performance", said Multi-shot Financial Director Angus Dunbar.

The 36 workforce is mostly divided between two disciplines - on the toolmaking side there are precision engineers and the moulding side is more process oriented.

"We are committed to an ongoing process of training, due to the highly skilled nature of our operations", said Dunbar.

"The upgrade of the production MRP software required training for a completely different skill set, but it has been a very worthwhile exercise".
