Grant enables two-for-one training deal

An Advanced Engineering Skills Project product story

An Advanced Engineering Skills Project grant meant that Rex-quote, from Somerset, was able to send two of its staff on an electrical multiskills NVQ level 2 course instead of one.

An Advanced Engineering Skills Project grant meant that Rex-quote, from Somerset, was able to send two of its staff on an electrical multiskills NVQ level 2 course instead of one.

The company, which manufactures road/rail equipment, is commencing a long-term programme to get its staff formally trained, and the two electricians were the first.

"We have done a lot of training in the past in terms of short courses and on-the-job training", said Personnel Manager Liz Ranson.

"But we decided that it was important for our company, and for our staff, that their skills should be recognised with formal qualifications".

The company, which employs 50 staff at its Bishops Lydeard premises, which started life as a specialist engineering firm, found its niche in making road and rail equipment excavators, dumpers and access equipment mostly for plant hire companies involved in railway track maintenance.

Rexquote finds it difficult to recruit people with the exact skills it needs, so it expects to recruit staff with a technical or electrical background, and goes on to provide more specific training.

There were three main reasons behind its decision to aim towards more formal qualifications across the company: first, to provide a solid and common grounding for staff in their specialist areas; secondly, to help staff with their own personal development; and thirdly to provide formal "proof" of the skills of their staff when working for clients.

"When we investigated what grants would be available to help us with the training, we found there was a much wider range than we had realised", said Ranson.

"Getting 50% of the training cost meant that we could start off by training two people instead of one".
