AC motor applications demand imagination

Debut at Drives and Controls
AEG Lafert Electric Motors will be exhibiting its range of induction motors for the first time at the Drives and Controls Show at the UK NEC.
Space was allowed for the AC motor in the design but unfortunately not enough to accommodate a brake and the encoder required for position information.
To overcome the problem, the spring machine manufacturer, Spuhl of Wittenbach, Switzerland approached Elektron (AEG Electric Motors' Swiss agent) to provide a solution.
Yet even AEG's brake motors, which are shorter than typical alternative units because of the optimised motor/brake interface resulting from a common manufacturer, would not fit.
Then the Kiss principle kicked in.
Peter Hanseler, Project Engineer at Elektron, came up with the idea of fitting pairs of permanent magnets at 180 degrees to each other on both the underside of the motor's cooling fan and end face of the motor housing.
The result when the motor is under power the driving force overcomes the attraction of the magnets but when power is removed the shaft is "locked" by the magnets in the desired position until power is applied again.
