Motors keep prima donnas on the move

The new advanced stage operating systems at La Scala in Milan offer a million permutations of scenery movements using 170 special brake motors from AEG Lafert.

After lying in the "dark" for three years, December 2004 saw the reopening of La Scala in Milan, the jewel of Italian opera.

This has been achieved as a result of a GBP 40 million extensive repair and refurbishment that includes the installation of probably the most advanced stage operating systems in the world.

The new electronically controlled systems, operated from a computerised control centre some 18m down in the bowels of the theatre, are said to offer a million permutations of scenery movements, providing almost limitless options for future productions.

Incorporated into the drive systems employed for moving the scenery are 170 special brake motors from AEG Lafert.

These motors are designed specially for theatre application, being extremely quiet (no cooling fans) and having the facility to accept encoders to ensure precise positioning of scenery.

The silent operation of the motors is particularly important for this application because it permits scenery to be moved un-noticed during performances.

The AEG Lafert Amby motors, which are ideal for frequent starts/hour, have been supplied in various frame sizes from 80 to 315 with power ratings from 1.1 to 160kW.

The DC brakes provide silent progressive braking (up to 200% peak).

Similar motors (89) from AEG Lafert are installed in the La Fenice which opened in December 2003 and again these motors were supplied as part of a package assembled by Bosch Rexroth.
