Able makes metering system for National Grid

An Able Instruments and Controls product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 23, 2009

Able will install two electrically driven centrifugal compressors at the National Grid's gas terminal at St Fergus, to complement the existing compression facilities.

National Grid awarded contracts to Land and Marine and IMEG for the design, procurement and construction of the new compressor units.

As an addition to the main works, the existing metering systems will be upgraded and replaced using ultrasonic technology.

The proposed metering system comprises of two separate meter systems, each comprising of three 750mm ultrasonic meters.

Land and Marine commissioned Able Instruments and Controls to design, make and supply the engineered metering system.

One of Able's specialities is non-intrusive clamp on flow metering technology, for gas or liquid flow.

This removes the need for expensive pipe modifications and plant shutdowns during installation or maintenance.

The system comprises of non-intrusive gas flow meters linked to an omni-flow computer that interfaces with the distributed control system (DCS).

Able is using its Rigilok clamping system to mount the transducers to the pipe, offering a secure and robust system providing transducer protection and stability under harsh conditions.

The proposed systems will provide the following benefits: transducer frequency will be matched to the pipes' sonic properties; Wide-Beam technology will allow accurate operation over a range of flow rates and fluid properties; Autozero will calibrate for zero flow without needing to stop the flow; and Zeromatic Path will eliminate the effects of drift by automatically correcting for the drift-causing factors.
