Spring feed system cuts tangles for Borg Warner

An Action Feed Systems product story

A single-lane "accordion spring" feed system has been designed, fabricated and approved for an automotive division of Borg Warner.

A single-lane "accordion spring" feed system has been designed, fabricated and approved for an automotive division of Borg Warner.

Action Feed Systems provided a simplified tooling concept on a feeding system that had previously been done by several part feeding companies.

The Action system is designed with only one air assist jet for part separation just prior to final selection.

As is typical of AFS equipment, primarily mechanical cams and tooling devices are used to maximise the natural centre of gravity of the part being fed.

In this case tangles were removed from the feed line using these methods in an attempt to disentangle as many springs as possible with as little operator intervention as possible.

A machined discharge and vibratory inline track was included, using 300 series stainless steel to negate a problem with magnetisation of both the piece parts and the tooling components.

The machined sections are also ion nitrided for wear protection.

Feed rate on this system is 60 parts per minute and a full track shut-off was integrated using fibre-optic through-beam sensors wired into the vibratory inline and feeder bowl control.

The system was so well received that AFS has been contracted to retool several of the existing feed systems with similar simplified tooling concepts.

This rework will help alleviate some of the issues with the other units currently set for production.
