Airchannel helps timber specialist save energy

An Airchannel product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Nov 20, 2009

Airchannel has installed a variable speed compressor for DG Heath (Timber Products) that will provide a 50 per cent energy cost saving per annum.

Based in Pontarddulais, Swansea, DG Heath was established in 1985 and is a supplier of timber and quality-related timber products to the trade, retail and public sector.

The business specialises in timber decking, fencing, laminate and solid hardwood flooring as well as the manufacturing of wooden pallets and cases.

Prior to the installation, Airchannel had conducted a data log of the company's site that revealed potential savings could be made with a new type of compressor.

When the existing equipment developed a problem that was beyond economical repair, a new variable speed unit was recommended.

The survey indicated DG Heath could save 51 per cent a year on energy bills and the payback on a new compressor would take just 33 months.

To obtain a Carbon Trust loan, Airchannel supported the application with data log graphs and documentary proof of the savings that could be achieved; these were then analysed by the Carbon Trust to see if all the figures added up.

Within 10 days approval had been granted to purchase a variable speed compressor.

Neil Heath, a director at DG Heath (Timber Products), said: 'Airchannel advised us that we would make significant energy savings with a new variable speed compressor and due to this we could also qualify for the Carbon Trust's interest-free loan.

'Airchannel delivered and installed the new compressor within about two weeks.

'The engineer also completed the documents for warranty and commissioning that were sent to the Carbon Trust,' he added.

Airchannel offers a range of services that can identify inefficient compressed air use and make independent recommendations for cost-effective solutions that meet a customer's operational needs.
