Asbestos roofs have been present in the Australian workplace for 30 years or more, and an exhibitor at The Safety Show Sydney says that, generally speaking, they are all in poor condition.

Metro Waterproofing, an exhibitor at The Safety Show, Sydney, which runs from 26-28 October 2005, has a system called Fibroseal that simply and instantly encapsulates and preserves asbestos roofing.

Metro Waterproofing says asbestos roofs are degraded in as little as 10 years by sunlight and acid-releasing lichens that attack the cement binding the asbestos fibres.

Dark discolouration is a sure sign of decay, according to Metro Waterproofing.

Aside from affecting the performance of the roof, the deterioration ultimately leads to the loosening of asbestos fibres, which can then wash into gutters or be carried into roof-mounted air conditioners.

The Fibroseal treatment is a cost-effective alternative to roof replacement, according to Metro Waterproofing.

An applicator first assesses the condition of the asbestos, applies the appropriate number of coats of Fibroseal primer and then reassesses the roof.

Once the primer has bound all material effectively, one or more topcoats are applied.

Applied by Metro Waterproofing, Fibroseal's integrity is guaranteed for 10 years and carries the Australian Paint Approval Scheme (APAS) No 1720/2.

Aside from the cost benefits of extended roof life, Metro Waterproofing says the insulative properties of Fibroseal slashes heating and cooling costs, claiming temperature decreases of 15-20C.

Visitors to Metro Waterproofing's stand N47 at The Safety Show are also entitled to an obligation-free assessment and a 10 per cent discount on sealing services.

The Safety Show, Sydney, runs from 26-28 October 2005 at the Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park, Australia.
