Leading Australian intellectual Dr Barry Jones and the owner of Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Restaurant, Tobie Puttock, are among those to address the tenth anniversary Safety In Action Conference over its three days from March 20 to 22 in Melbourne.
The Conference opens with a breakfast address by Tobie Puttock, who will offer an entertaining look at the safety challenges faced in a top-class kitchen with the added complexity created by working with disadvantaged young people in this high-pressure environment.
The first day, hosted by Dr Barry Jones, celebrates the Safety In Action 10-year milestone with an analysis of the future of occupational health and safety (OHS) and how safety managers can prepare for its challenges.
Among those offering an insight into the future is Professor Niki Ellis of the University of Queensland, who will discuss why OHS is shifting from a model of harm minimisation to the optimisation of health and wellbeing at work.
She will also present a review of Australia's occupational health's scorecard and proposed directions for the next decade.
International experts, Professor Tore Larsson of Sweden and Professor Patrick Hudson of the Netherlands will tackle hazardous workplaces.
Professor Larsson's address, titled the Politics of Safety, considers the controversy surrounding government responsibility for risk exposure, while Professor Hudson will identify a host of outside forces that influence the running of hazardous operations.
New research will make its debut during the Safety In Action Conference's first day too, when eminent Australian researcher Dr Eric Wigglesworth speaks about his soon-to-be released 20-year study that reveals a morning's work literally can be a killer.
The day concludes with the opportunity for delegates to ask questions of the expert panel in an open forum while day two will begin with a keynote address by WorkSafe executive director John Merritt.
Across its three days, Conference will also explore innovative OHS solutions, investigative techniques, tools for managers, leadership and culture, risk management, what works and what does not, and local government.
The Safety In Action Conference is hosted by the Victorian division of the Safety Institute of Australia (SIA) and sponsored by WorkSafe Victoria.
President of SIA Victoria Phil Lovelock said the Conference program was very carefully balanced.
"We've got a great mix of topics that cover everything from the intensely practical tools you can use right now through to a speculative look into the future of OHS," he said.
The Safety In Action Conference and concurrent trade show run from March 20 to 22 next year at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.
