ABB is to improve and expand the process control system as part of a planned upgrade to Talisman Energy's Claymore platform in the North Sea The upgrade is one of a number of projects intended to extend the life of the platform beyond 2020; the controls upgrade is necessary to allow the existing control room to be relocated from the main production platform to the accommodation platform

Canadian-owned Talisman wants to extend the process control system network to cover the new control room.

Additional signals will have to be interfaced with the network from existing equipment on the production platform and the control network will benefit from increased input/output capacity.

ABB will supply a process control system I/O interface panel to integrate with the existing Bailey PCS network.

The panel will be fitted with serial link modules using standard Modbus protocols for connection to third party devices.

ABB staff will work closely with Talisman to complete the upgrade with no interference to production.

The work will be carried out over the next few months.

The Claymore platform has been in production since 1977.

Talisman Energy (UK) took over as operator in May 2000.
