ABB is to upgrade the Novartis Torre Annunziata plant in Italy, allowing the site to have multipurpose fermentation production capabilities.

ABB is to upgrade the Novartis Torre Annunziata plant in Italy, allowing the site to have multipurpose fermentation production capabilities.

Although the Torre Annunziata site is mainly focused on finished pharmaceutical manufacturing with products that are exported globally, it is also a primary biotech facility where Novarits produces active ingredients and bulk products, using fermentation and downstream production units.

Among them is the production of Desferal, an active ingredient used against the Mediterranean anemia disease.

"The ABB Industrial IT solution provides us with the latest technology that complies with 21 CFR Part 11, while delivering all the expanded capabilities required for our new strategic active ingredient production", said Torre Annunziata production and maintenance Management.

ABB's delivery includes the replacement of an existing ABB control system with a new system comprising Operate IT operator stations, Control IT AC800F controllers, and Produce IT Batch software.

ABB will also provide a wide scope of additional services including engineering, validation, configuration and external contractor coordination.

The Industrial IT upgrade enables compliance with FDA regulation issues and 21 CFR Part 11.

The new Produce IT Batch system is one of the first used in a biotechnology facility.

ABB's global expertise, installed base and commitment to revamp the existing control systems in a tight timeframe without interruption to production were key to the plant's decision.

The two-phase project is scheduled to begin in August with the Fermentation replacement.

The downstream plant upgrade is set for December, providing automation fully 21 CFR Part 11 compliant.
