ABB recently joined the "Bio-Man" project together with Malardalen University in Sweden, Pharmacia-Upjohn and Pharmadule.

ABB recently joined the "Bio-Man" project together with Malardalen University in Sweden, Pharmacia-Upjohn and Pharmadule for the development of new methodology for the production of biotechnology substances.

The industrial biotechnology industry is facing new demands on flexible production, where different products will be produced in the same plant.

This is especially important in the phase when research results are brought to full-scale production in a way assuring quality aspects.

A pilot plant with fermentation and proceeding separation/refining steps has been erected in Strangnas by Malardalen University (BCS).

Different pharmaceutical companies, like Pharmacia-Upjohn, will use the plant to optimise the process conditions before starting full-scale production of the specific pharmaceutical substance.

ABB and Malardalen University will team up to develop the methodology for the "Bio-Man" project.

This will involve factorial design, multivariate analysis and process modelling.

ABB's software will serve as a tool in the modelling process, the quality control and the control of the pilot plant.

Participating in this project along with Malardalen University are Royal Institute of Technology and several other companies including the Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology (SIK), Pharmacia, and Pharmadule.

Vinnova will provide financial support for the project.

"We are very happy to participate in this project, as it gives ABB a chance to learn about the newest production technology, as well as gives us a chance to demonstrate and develop the newest control and optimisation technology for the pharmaceutical industry.

Both Malardalen University and the Royal Institute of Technology are important University partners for ABB in the further development of IndustrialIT for different process industries", says Dinesh Paliwal, President of ABB Industries Division in Zurich.

"The co-operation of leading companies like ABB, Pharmacia-Upjohn, Pharmadule and others in The Malardalen region is very positive for Malardalen University, as applied research coordinated with major companies is a major focus of our research strategy", says Hasse Odeno, President of Malardalen University.
