Apprentices and adult learners who use work-based training to achieve their career goals were recognised at award ceremony at Bolton's Reebok Stadium.

An awards ceremony has been staged to recognise the achievements of apprentices and adult learners who use work-based training to achieve their career goals Some 200 invited guests converged at Bolton's Reebok Stadium to pay tribute to the winners at the annual awards evening of training specialist Alliance Learning

The Bolton-based organisation provides vocational training and advice for businesses and hundreds of local people - specialising in apprenticeships and commercial training courses.

It operates from offices in Horwich, Bolton, Radcliffe and Leigh.

Granada TV news reporter Elaine Willcox presented plaques and cash awards to the winners who have excelled in their training and learning activities.

Around 900 learners from across the region were eligible to be considered, with nominations received from their Alliance Learning instructors and learning and development officers as well as individual employers.

Apprentice Of The Year was Anthony Holt from Procter and Gamble, Trafford Park, who was described as a "model apprentice" who possess an "excellent work attitude".

Holt has also starred in an Alliance Learning DVD to encourage other young people to follow in his career footsteps.

Company Award For Training and Development went to CLS Care Services Group from Nantwich, which operates a series of residential care homes across the region and was singled out for strong support of staff training, providing all employees with access to NVQ qualifications and apprenticeship programmes.

Jane Starr Employee Of the Year Award went to Maureen Culshaw, an Alliance Learning key and basic skills learning and development officer, who was recognised for being "enthusiastic, helpful, caring and 100% committed".

She said her colleagues were the "best people she has ever worked with".

Engineering Academy Learner of the Year was Joe Fenton from Radcliffe Riverside High School who was described as being "keen, reliable, dedicated and trustworthy".

Fenton has completed an NVQ level two in engineering, securing the most units of any other learner in the 14 to 16 age group.

Alliance Learning's Chief Executive David Guthrie said: "The evening was a great success as we celebrated the outstanding achievements of successful learners from across the region".

"At Alliance Learning we work closely with employers, their staff and schools to ensure training and development plans are at the heart of achieving business and career objectives".

"We draw upon the expertise of our very own highly qualified practitioners whom have a wealth of experience across a range of industries to deliver the very best high quality programmes".

Guests contributed £440 during a fund raising raffle for Bolton Hospice, Alliance Learning's nominated charity, where first prize was a signed and framed Bolton Wanderers football shirt.

Alliance Learning was formed in 1966 and provides a range of training services to businesses across the north Manchester and south Lancashire area.

These include the delivery of apprenticeships and a wide range of commercial training courses in areas such as engineering, care, first aid and management.

The firm is employer-led with around 100 members and 1600 user companies ranging in size from two to 600 employees.

It employs 95 staff and has acquired Centre of Vocational Excellence status in engineering fabrication and welding and operates a successful engineering academy to inspire engineers of the future.

Guthrie said: "Alliance Learning continues to play a prominent and very effective role in the success of many local companies where staff development is high on the agenda".
