Miniature gas sensors meet new HSE specs
A new range of miniature gas sensors have performance characteristics that meet the requirements of the latest UK standards on exposure to nitrogen dioxide and chlorine gas.
A new range of miniature gas sensors have performance characteristics that meet the requirements of the latest changes in the UK Health and Safety Executive's standards on exposure to nitrogen dioxide and chlorine gas The maximum allowable exposure for these two gases is now 1ppm, and previous published time weighted average and short term exposure limits have been withdrawn by HSE

New range of NO2 sensors provides OEM alternative
Alphasense has launched a new range of Nitrogen Dioxide sensors which supplement the already established Toxic gas sensor ranges which include Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen Sulfide and Sulfur Dioxide
Toxic gas sensors socket mount directly into PCBs
Initially available for the measurement of Carbon Monoxide and Hydrogen Sulfide, Alphasense's D Series toxic gas sensors may be directly socket mounted into printed circuit boards
HSE's action is the result of a growing awareness of the effects of even low concentrations of these gases on asthma sufferers.
At concentrations exceeding 1ppm, irritation to the lungs can lead to asthma attack in asthmatics.
The change in regulations will lead to an increasing demand for personal protection instrumentation to ensure that industries comply with the new exposure limit requirements.
The D Series nitrogen dioxide and chlorine sensors measure 14.5mm in diameter and 8.4mm high, allowing portable gas monitor manufacturers to design smaller personal usage instrumentation.
These sensors do not require power, so can be used in products using button batteries to give protection for extended periods of time.
Previously available chlorine and nitrogen dioxide sensors are proving inadequate for this application due to severe changes to the base line (zero gas) signal on exposure to transient changes in relative humidity.
These changes in base line can be as high as 5 or 6ppm equivalent gas concentration that, in the absence of the target gas, would trigger a false alarm.
The Alphasense CL2-D and NO2-D miniature sensors overcome this condition and the base line remains well below 1ppm when exposed to step changes of 90% in relative humidity levels.
The sensors are also resistant to exposure to exhaled breath that in other offerings has a severe effect on base line output.
The use of Alphasense sensors will lead to better protection of asthmatic and normally healthy employees who are currently exposed to unsafe levels of chlorine and nitrogen dioxide.
Other sensors available in this family are carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphide and the new and unique D2 (patents pending) dual gas sensor for carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphide in one miniature package and the CH-D3 miniature pellistor for flammable gases.
