Sheffield-based AME Product Development Solutions has created a modular helmet for Modular Helmet Systems.

The fire helmet market is driven by tradition and regional preferences, and European markets have led the move away from traditional to full shell design helmet.

This sort of design offers side impact protection, but brings with it the problems of added weight and some hearing loss.

In addition, a fully enclosed helmet is overengineered for some applications, such as wild land firefighting, where firefighters are seldom at risk of injury by falling objects, but might suffer heat exhaustion if helmets are not adequately ventilated.

The modular helmet can suit different environments, so versions of it could be used in structural fires or wild land fires as well as by paramedics and technical rescue services.

The helmet is injection-moulded with snap-together parts which allow for three configurations, from the basic helmet with impact protection and venting for air flow, to a full structural helmet including side and rear impact protection.

The ability to replace damaged components, rather than the whole helmet, also increases its longevity.
