Industrial design in the kitchen

An AME Prototypes product story

AME Design, Sheffield's industrial design consultancy, has been appointed by Harrison Fisher to revolutionise the common can opener.

AME Design, Sheffield's industrial design consultancy, has been appointed by Harrison Fisher to revolutionise the common can opener.

Harrison Fisher, a prestigious manufacturer of premium knifeware, turned to AME Design following direction from its Chairman regarding poor user experiences associated with the traditional style can-opener.

AME Design was briefed to realise a user-focused product design - while providing an emotive element through changing the aesthetics of the everyday utensil.

Working closely with Harrison Fisher from initial concept to end product, AME's design team brought onboard extra creative insight, the latest design and product-realisation techniques and a combined 50 years of product design experience.

Developed for Harrison Fisher's stylish "Taylor's eye witness" range, the new can opener, dubbed "Pelican", works on the principle of a ratchet system.

As well as making the process of opening cans effortless, the Pelican also enables users to lift and pour the attached tin, and creates an elegant addition to any modern kitchen.

Alastair Fisher, Managing Director at Harrison Fisher added: "We were impressed by the enthusiasm that the team at AME showed to our project and we are delighted with the final design solution".

Chris Gurr, Head of Design at AME said: "For me this is the true meaning of design - creating original, stylish solutions".

"This project has allowed AME Design to explore new and exciting ways of improving the everyday".

"We worked closely with Harrison Fisher from the outset - it was a problem their chairman had highlighted and we therefore provided him a chic and practical solution".

Pelican will be available in good houseware retailers from September 2005.
