Valve ensures diesel safety offshore

The tight shutoff capability of the Amot 4261 emergency air shutoff valve led MTU of Germany to specify the SpeedTrap diesel engine shutdown system.

The tight shutoff capability of the Amot 4261 emergency air shutoff valve, and Amot's ability to specially design a new larger 10in model of the valve, led MTU of Germany to specify the SpeedTrap diesel engine shutdown system on an engine it was producing for offshore power generation This valve prevents the dangers of engine runaway and self-destruction caused by a diesel's potential to burn hydrocarbon vapours or other combustible matter even after its fuel source has been closed

An O-ring seal ensures a positive shutdown of the air supply to stop the engine as required for complete safety.

A 10in valve was needed to match the size and power of the 16V 4000 series engine required for offshore power generation, as well as an increasing general trend towards larger engines, which meant that the previous top size of 8in for the air shutoff valve would not big enough for the job.

Another feature of the Amot runaway protection system valued by MTU, a Daimler Chrysler company located in Friedrichshafen, was its solid state sensing and valve control that increased reliability and robustness while facilitating custom interfacing with controlling equipment to its specific needs.

Additionally, Amot was able to answer MTU's urgent need for the system with a response time of just ten weeks from order to production, despite the design and manufacture of a new model size.

In operation the control panel monitors engine speed and sends a shutdown demand to the valve if it exceeds a set limit.

A valve position feedback signal confirms valve actuation. Request a free brochure from AMOT ...
