Gateway takes USB to new heights - and lengths

An Amplicon product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 10, 2004

The AnywhereUSB gateway is the first device of its kind to be available in the UK, allowing USB devices to be monitored over an Ethernet network, including LANs, WANs and the Internet.

The AnywhereUSB gateway is the first device of its kind to be available in the UK, a remote networking solution which allows up to five USB 1.0, 1.1 or 2.0 (operating at 12Mbps) devices to communicate with a host PC over an Ethernet network running TCP/IP.

Incorporating unique USB over IP technology, this original product provides a completely transparent connection to a PC allowing the user to operate USB devices across a LAN, WAN or the Internet, removing the 5m distance limitation between USB peripheral and host.

The new technology allows central monitoring of remote USB devices without the requirement to modify software.

This makes it ideal for applications such as surveillance, kiosks, point-of-sale and general automation tasks.

The product also adds a layer of redundancy into any system that is dependent on USB devices through its "host-swap" capability.

If the host PC should crash, another host can be allocated to continue communications with the AnywhereUSB, preventing excessive system downtime in critical applications.

The product can really be appreciated when a USB device is plugged into the AnywhereUSB and the 'found new hardware' dialogue box appears on the host.

The user requires no in-depth networking knowledge thanks to the easy-to-use configuration software that ships with the product.

David Evans, Amplicon's data communications product manager comments "The potential market for this product is massive and our recent success with serial to Ethernet technology gives us a great insight into the marketing of such an innovative gateway device".

The company will be offering a special introductory price to celebrate the launch of AnywhereUSB.

Amplicon has recently signed a new distribution agreement with Digi, manufacturer of the AnywhereUSB device, and in addition will also be distributing the company's series of serial to WLAN device servers.
