Two members of the Digital Factory Team at the Institute for Automotive and Manufacturing Advanced Practice (AMAP) have recently received prestigious industry recognised professional awards.

Dave Knapton, Lead Application Consultant, who has extensive design knowledge of Catia, in designing automotive components with Sunderland based Magna Kansei, has been awarded prestigious status of Catia Certified Professional.

He passed with flying colours and joins an elite group of certified Catia users.

In addition Sajid Abdullah, Lead Application Consultant has been awarded Chartered Engineer status from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

"Certification is becoming more and more, a part of the lifelong learning and, therefore, provides me with a better preparation, to take control of my career", said Abdullah.

"At AMAP we take a strategic approach to technology: we don't just look at the individual CAD applications/training requirements but consider value added across the whole supply chain".

Both programmes are a proven method for evaluating and measuring professional competence and establishing industry standards of excellence in mainstream engineering.

Alan Stafford, Project Manager at the AMAP Digital Factory said: "He was delighted at the commitment to development from his team, and was very pleased with the outcome".

"This clearly endorses their competences, as well as demonstrating their professional status it also shows that they have a serious commitment to their career and the profession".

"It also echoes the aims of the Digital Factory regional skills development programme, whilst demonstrates the quality of staff we have at AMAP and provides them with the professional recognition to support their personal development".

Based within the University of Sunderland, the AMAP Digital Factory specialises in digital engineering technologies, and offers a comprehensive range of industrial knowledge and expertise to assist with digital engineering technology.

All training is of the highest quality, providing industry standard certification with the option to enrol on the university's "essentials" module.

This provides university certification equivalent to 25% of the first year on an engineering degree and is aimed at ensuring a high level of knowledge and skills beyond industry standard training in order to maximise the long term benefits to an organisation.

The project has already delivered over 2700 learning opportunities to companies in the region and is targeted to deliver 4600 by March 2008.

Training is delivered at AMAP's excellent facilities in Sunderland, at satellite facilities around the region or on companies' own sites.
