The Best of British Industry awards took place on 8th February 2007, providing the opportunity to examine and celebrate the achievements of modern British companies.

The North East Productivity Alliance (NEPA) was recognised for its outstanding achievements helping regional companies and was awarded 3rd place in the "Supporter of British Industry" award.

The University of Sunderland's innovative automotive centre has helped the region receive national recognition for its support of British industry.

The university's Institute for Automotive and Manufacturing Advanced Practice (AMAP) helped the North East Productivity Alliance (NEPA) get shortlisted for the Best of British Industry Awards.

NEPA was awarded third place for its continued support of British industry.

It was the only programme from the North East to make it into the finals of the national awards.

The award, in the Supporting British Industry section, recognised the university's and NEPA's contribution to industry by helping companies to improve productivity, be more competitive by using new technologies, increasing skills and fostering the development of a research culture.

Judges, including former Director General of the CBI Sir Digby Jones, said NEPA's initiatives had made a "demonstrable difference" to the industry's performance.

NEPA is a coalition of the region's leading industrialists, which was set up to protect and improve the future of manufacturing in the region, particularly the automotive industry.

AMAP delivers, among other projects, two of the four elements of the NEPA's strategy for manufacturing in the region.

These are the Digital Factory and Engineering Fellows projects, which collectively are worth almost GBP 7 million.
