Weld overlay cladding specialist Arc Energy Resources has applied a coating of corrosion resistant alloy for A Finkl and Sons, to protect a brand new oilfield valve and refurbish an old one.

A Finkl and Sons of Chicago is one of the world's leading suppliers of forging die steels, plastic mould steels, die casting tool steels and custom open-die forgings.

Finkl UK, established in 1990 in Warley in the West Midlands, was the first Finkl warehouse to operate outside of the USA and today stocks a range of specialised forged steels as well as offering comprehensive machining, testing and heat-treatment services.

Explains Finkl UK Managing Director Steve Hadley: "Customers in the oil and gas industry, for whom we stock specialised steel forgings, often subcontract our machine shop to manufacture oilfield valves".

He quotes a recent export contract, where Finkl was asked to manufacture a new 5.125in blowout preventer valve body and refurbish a 5in body.

Both valves, which are 2ft square and 3ft long, are designed to stop blowouts from oil wells.

Says Hadley: "As the dual valve bodies are handling aggressive oils or gases that corrode the surface of the steel, the specification for both included a corrosion and wear resistant weld overlay cladding to their inside diameters".

"We talked to a number of weld overlay cladding specialists about the coating before selecting Arc Energy Resources, who impressed us with their technical ability and experience of welding specialised corrosion resistant alloys.

We are more than happy with the service they provided".

Arc Energy applied a weld overlay cladding of Inconel 625 to all three bores of the new 5.125in valve.

The main bore of the 5in valve, which had been eaten away by sour gas or oil, was first machined to remove the corrosion and then coated by Arc Energy.

Finkl then machine-finished the bore to its original specification.

As Steve Hadley points out: "The refurbished valve is actually better than it was when new because it is now protected with a coating of Inconel 625 corrosion resistant alloy".

Says Arc Energy Sales Manager Alan Brown: "Today's hydrocarbon processing produces much more aggressive 'cocktails' of corrosive media that are capable of causing anything from straightforward metal loss corrosion to catastrophic failures resulting from stress corrosion cracking".

"Weld overlay cladding, using a range of corrosion resistant alloys, is a very effective way to reduce the cost of new equipment and reclaim equipment that is worn".
