Weld overlay cladding specialist Arc Energy Resources has recently shipped a selection of stainless steel clad flanges to Belgium-based Icarus, which specialises in the manufacture of bespoke flanges, valves and pipe fittings for the oil and gas, petrochemical and nuclear industries.

Many of the products manufactured by Icarus for its customers are produced in small quantities, non standard sizes and with specific tolerances that, under normal circumstances, would take several weeks to produce.

However, using its advanced welding processes, Arc Energy was able to offer a fast turnaround on three orders for conventional low-temperature-tested carbon steel flanges clad with 316L stainless steel.

For the most recent order, three large flanges were delivered to Arc Energy's Gloucestershire factory and pre-machined to accept the cladding, which was then applied in two layers to ensure that the full chemical requirements of 316L were met.

The flanges were then finish machined and NDT inspected - all within nine days.

"Reliability, quality and fast turnaround are vital in our business due to critical service conditions in the corrosive, abrasive, high-pressure and high- and low-temperature environments of the oil and gas industries", explains a spokesman for Icarus.

"We were struggling to find a company that could work to these tolerances and in a short time frame, but following a successful order completed three years ago, Arc Energy's speed and efficiency gave us the confidence to place the new orders".

For use in the oil and gas production industry, the flanges - ranging from 16 to 36in and totalling 19 in all - form part of a piping system that is subjected to a number of corrosive elements depending on the refinement stage including C02, H2S and chlorides found in marine environments.

Commenting for Arc Energy, Sales Director Alan Brown says: "There are many advantages to using clad components over those made of solid corrosion resistant alloys, but the relative availability of standard flanges is the main one".

"For all three orders, Icarus needed the flanges extremely quickly to ensure very high profile offshore projects were not delayed, which can cause losses far in excess of the value of the goods".
