Arc Energy Resources has completed the overlay cladding of 35 oil pipeline bulkheads manufactured by W Maass for the Tweedsmuir Development in the North Sea.

W Maass (UK), which manufactures special connectors, flanges and other pipeline equipment for oil, petrochemical and process projects around the world, has developed a 12-year relationship with weld overlay cladding specialist Arc Energy Resources that means the two companies co-operate where corrosion resistance is a vital element in component specifications.

The most recent example is a contract for 35 pipeline bulkheads destined for the Tweedsmuir Development in the North Sea.

The insulated bulkheads, which consist of inner and outer pipes with 12-18 and 8-14in nominal bores, are designed to maintain the temperature of the fluid in subsea pipelines to ensure an uninterrupted flow.

They were manufactured by W Maass from high yield carbon steel forgings and their internal surfaces were clad by Arc Energy with a 3.5mm coating of Inconel 625.

W Maass is also currently designing and manufacturing a special pipe-in-pipe hot tap tee component for the same project, which will allow a future tie-in to the pipeline, should it be required by the operator.

This component will also be fully clad by Arc Energy.

Commenting on the relationship, W Maass Managing Director David Toone says: "Over the 12 years we have worked with Arc Energy, the quality of their cladding and their service has always been consistently high".

"We now source all our weld overlay cladding from them and they in turn co-operate with us on contracts, so when we win they get the cladding order".

Arc Energy Sales Director Alan Brown agrees that the relationship works very well and adds that the two companies developed their partnership before partnerships were fashionable.
