Alloy protects huge connectors against corrosion

An Arc Energy Resources product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Feb 25, 2008

Arc Energy was able to carry out the post weld heat treatment of 1066mm Techlok connectors in one of its own calibrated furnaces.

When Vector International produced eight of the largest pipeline clamp connectors ever made, it called in Arc Energy Resources to apply a protective coating of corrosion resistant alloy.

Qatargas 3 and Qatargas 4 are two of the world's largest LNG developments.

Among the equipment specified for two well head platforms are hundreds of Techlok clamp connectors from Vector International.

Of the hundreds of Techlok connectors delivered, a number needed the added protection of a special Alloy 625 corrosion proof protection, which is applied by weld overlay cladding.

Vector International has for many years used Gloucestershire based Arc Energy Resources to carry out weld overlay cladding on Techlok connectors for projects of this type.

Vector produced eight 1066mm Techlok connectors, which the company believes to be the largest clamp connectors of this type produced anywhere in the world.

Gary Walford of Vector said "We also supplied 660 and 304mm connectors to Qatargas 3 and 4 but we have never manufactured anything as big as the 42in connector before and we don't think anyone else has".

"The sheer size of the connectors made this cladding operation special".

"The fact that we had to apply our usual quality standards to such a large piece of equipment also meant that it was a very technical project for us and for Arc Energy".

Due to the size and the tight tolerances specified it was decided to stress relieve the connectors after weld overlay cladding.

Arc Energy was able to carry out the post weld heat treatment in one of its own calibrated furnaces.
