Stainless steel mechanical struts provide a corrosion-resistant and maintenance-free alternative to the conventional gas struts on refrigerated delivery vehicles.
Associated Spring has developed a series of patented Raymond stainless steel mechanical struts specifically to provide a corrosion-resistant and maintenance-free alternative to the conventional gas struts currently used on refrigerated delivery vehicles.
The company, a subsidiary of Barnes Group, has responded to the requirements of the food distribution industry in general with specific solutions for Tesco and Chereau that overcome the ongoing problem of gas strut degradation within the hostile environment of chilled and/or refrigerated wagons.
French manufacturer Chereau specialises in the design and production of vehicles for temperature-controlled transportation.
An integral element of these refrigerated trailers is the need for flexible positioning and operation of internal bulkhead doors - effortless frequent opening and closing of the partitions is achieved with Raymond m-Struts.
These compact mechanical struts allow the driver readily to position partitions within the trailer body via a roof-mounted track system - a significant advantage when simultaneously transporting a variety of perishable goods with differing temperature storage requirements.
In the interests of safety, it is essential that the insulated heavy rear doors of refrigerated vehicles incorporate a method of controlled opening - hence the traditional use of gas struts in addition to hinges.
However, the Tesco home-delivery fleet was experiencing an unacceptably high level of corrosion and impaired performance due to the basic incompatibility of gas strut seals within a refrigerated environment.
Gas leakage was impairing the struts' performance, resulting in a loss of revenue and additional (nonroutine) maintenance costs while vehicles were out of commission for unscheduled gas strut replacement.
Associated Spring's maintenance-free stainless steel Raymond m-Strut are proving an ideal solution for Chereau and the Tesco home-delivery fleet - facilitating maximum flexibility and effective use of space within the refrigerated vehicles.
Robust, with no internal gases or seals to fail, resistant to corrosion and environmental contamination, unaffected by extreme temperatures - and with a 10-year lifetime guarantee - these mechanical struts are now being routinely fitted as part of the Tesco scheduled fleet maintenance programme.
Tesco reports that the replacement of conventional gas struts with Associated Spring's high-performance Raymond mechanical struts is already achieving substantial reductions in the operating costs of the company's dot.com fleet operation.
